What Are Spider Veins and the Treatment Options?

Clear skin is often sought after in many different forms. One type of skin blemish which individuals have and are often eager to get rid of is spider veins. Spider veins can be occasional occurrences on the skin or more prevalent in nature. If you are wondering what are spider veins and the treatment options, read on for the complete details and information on how you can tend to these skin blemishes.

What Are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are smaller vessels, which can be a number of colors, including red, blue, and purple. The spider veins twist around on the skin and can be found on various areas of the body, including the legs and face, where they are the most visible. Spider veins occur at random, however, there are instances where one may be predisposed to having spider veins. Some of the predispositions include heredity, standing occupations, obesity, hormonal influences, and other reasons.

What are the Treatment Options for Spider Veins?

Some individuals are fine with having spider veins and their presence doesn’t bother them in the least. For others, taking care of these pesky skin blemishes is a must. Fortunately, for the latter group of individuals, there are ways to treat spider veins, as well as help to prevent spider veins from appearing.

Here are some of the common ways to treat spider veins:

Sclerotherapy: Sclerotherapy consists of having a special solution injected in the veins which works to scar and close the veins, thereby directing blood flow to redirect and go through the healthier veins. Within just a few weeks, you’ll see those spider veins go away. This type of treatment usually works on the first try with the spider veins, but there are instances where a spider vein will have to be injected with the solution more than once.

Laser Surgery: Strong bursts of light are directed to the outside of the skin with the laser surgery method. The repeated laser applications will work on the spider vein and make it slowly disappear.

Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT): A newer method used to get rid of spider veins is endovenous laser therapy (EVLT). This treatment is sometimes used as opposed to having to remove a vein surgically. A laser fiber is inserted into the vein and then treated to destroy the vein. This type of treatment will remove the vein but may take up to a year to do so, in certain cases.

For those who are eager to prevent any future spider veins from popping up, you can try to limit the amount of new ones via the following methods:

  • Wear sunscreen
  • Don’t sit with your legs crossed for too long
  • Don’t be sedentary for long periods of time
  • Elevate your legs
  • Wear low-heeled shoes

Although these previously mentioned methods won’t make already visible spider veins go away, they will help with preventing new ones from occurring.
