What are Spider Veins?

What are Spider Veins?

what-are-spider-veins-top-vascular-surgeon-nyc-01Spider veins are a milder variation of varicose veins though they are still visibly unattractive lines on exposed skin. They tend to by much smaller and less swollen under the skin. Most spider veins range in sizes from the diameter of a hair to the size of spaghetti. They can be seen anywhere on the body, however they are most commonly found on the face, legs, and feet. These unsightly veins appear as networks of thin, red or purple, web-like lines. These web-like features are links of blood vessels on the surface of the skin. Spider veins form when a small group of blood vessels expand close to the surface of the skin, making them visible.

You will usually find spider veins developing on the ankle, thigh, and feet region. Even though they are small in size, the degree of pain and fatigue they bring can be great.  Besides discomfort they do not usually cause medical problems and can be eliminated through procedures such as laser treatment and sclerotherapy.

How Common are Spider Veins?

detail-spider-veins-treatment-02Though men are still subject to get spider veins, they are slightly more common in women. Over 40 percent of women have had some form of vein condition in their life; including spider veins. The chances of incidence increase with age.

Are Spider Veins Dangerous to My Health?

On most occasions, spider veins pose no health risk, though like varicose veins, they may produce a discomfort in the legs after prolonged standing which could indicate more severe venous disease. Even though the possibility of discomfort from spider veins is small, some people feel self-conscious when wearing clothing that may reveal their spider veins in public. This can be an inconvenience. Aside from an unpleasant appearance, one may experience some slight discomfort.

Still, many individuals choose to have their spider veins removed through one of the many options available. Removal can be done with several medical options to reduce the appearance of the visible web-like patterns on the skin.  Sometimes spider veins may cause aching or a throbbing sensation. These sensations are greater when the veins are located behind the knee.
